An emerald mine in Lower Cretaceous (130 ma old) calcareous schists.

The emerald deposits in the Muzo area occur in organic-rich black shales. Evidence from the Muzo mine shows that hydrothermal brines transported evaporitic sulphate to structurally favourable sites, where it was thermochemically reduced (Ottaway et al., 1994). The latter authors suggest that the sulphur generated by this process reacted with organic matter in the shales to release trapped chromium, vanadium and beryllium, which in turn enabled emerald formation.
