Monazite-(La) from
Siglo Veinte Mine, Llallagua, Rafael Bustillo Province, Potosí, Bolivia

Locality type:Mine
Classification
Species:Monazite-(La)
Formula:La(PO4)
Comments:Some collectors have assumed that Llallagua monazite is monazite-(La) on the basis of old wet-chemical analyses (Federico Ahlfeld, Gordon (1939), and others) showing slightly more La than Ce; but those analyses referred to GROUPS of rare earth elements rather than La and Ce individually, and a considerable amount of Nd was included in the "La". Several more recent microprobe analyses show Ce-dominance. (Alfredo Petrov)
