Phlogopite from
Passaic pit (Marshall Mine; Passaic Mine), Sterling Hill, Ogdensburg, Sussex County, New Jersey, USA

Locality type:Pit
Classification
Species:Phlogopite
Formula:KMg3(AlSi3O10)(OH)2
Formation:Primary
Comments:Large essentially black crystals to over 9 cm across and more than 15 cm long in marble associated with tough, massive, dark augite/gahnite rock in the East Ore Vein. Good crystals at the contacts of these rocks. 2008 EDS analysis shows abundant Mg plus much Fe, Zn and Mn; XRD with 10.3 Γ… spacing indicates a phlogopite-3T polytype, probably mixed with some phlogopite-1M, seeing that the (001) reflection is broad ranging down to 9.2 Γ… and the other peaks are sharp (Van King communication 2016).
Habit:stubby to elongated, tapered prismatic with pseudohexagonal outline rarely terminated by pinacoids
Colour:black
Quality for species:Good crystals or rich for species - important (!)
Abundance at site:Very common
Confirmation
Validity:Believed Valid
