Pumpellyite-(Mg) from
O & G Southbury Quarry (Silliman Quarry; O & G No. 2 Quarry), Orenaug Hills, Woodbury, Litchfield County, Connecticut, USA

Locality type:Quarry
Classification
Species:Pumpellyite-(Mg)
Formula:Ca2MgAl2(Si2O7)(SiO4)(OH)2 · H2O
Formation:Secondary
Comments:Based on the chemical formula given in Garabedian (1998), the species is pumpellyite-(Mg). Few specimens have been confirmed by analyses to differentiate it from several other possible pumpellyite group minerals. One of the first minerals to crystallize in vesicles, so is typically present between later minerals and the basalt matrix, a second stage crystallization came after early calcite, anhydrite, chalcedony, a trapezohedral zeolite, and datolite and so may coat or replace these minerals. May by itself fill entire vesicles.
Habit:fibrous micro-crystals
Colour:dark olive green
Quality for species:Good crystals or rich for species - important (!)
Abundance at site:Very common
Confirmation
Validity:Believed Valid
