Schulenbergite from
Mascot Mine, Gorham, Coos County, New Hampshire, USA

Locality type:Mine
Classification
Species:Schulenbergite
Formula:(Cu,Zn)7(SO4)2(OH)10 · 3H2O
Comments:Indentified by SEM and XRD at the Denever USGS lab (Gene Foord), the UNO lab (Jim Nazimoff & Al Falster), and Excaliber Minerals (Tony Nickershir).

Schulenbergite can be confused with aurichalcite here; but the acicular natue of aurichalcite crusts and mats of needles is obvious - while the schulenbergite specimens appear either platy or grainy at magnifications of under approx. 120X (or greater?) The acicular nature of the schulenbergite was only revealed by SEM imaging.
Habit:Crusts, foliated sheets, crude hemispheres, and crude rosettes of extremely tiny acicular needles
Colour:Very pale sky-blue to slightly greenish-blue, with a pearly to somewhat waxy luster.
Luminescent properties:none
Quality for species:Poor for species, only of interest for locality collectors. (#)
Abundance at site:Rare
Confirmation
Validity:Confirmed
Confirmation Methods:XRD
Analysis Reference:Gene Foord (pers. communication to Alan Plante).
