Ankerite from
Phoenixville tunnel (Conrail tunnel; Black Rock tunnel), Phoenixville, Schuylkill Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, USA

Locality type:Tunnel
Classification
Species:Ankerite
Formula:Ca(Fe2+,Mg)(CO3)2
Comments:Benchmark chemical analysis of samples by W.P. Headden as reported in the 1874 Second Geological Survey of Pennsylvania, by F. A. Genth. Often occuring with a brown superficial coating, frequently associated with Pyrite crystals. I.D. noted as doubtful by A. Montgomery, Min PA, 1922-69. discredited status contested by A. Heyl in USGS study 1984 (MinRec v20 #5 pg. 377)

Published analysis, in Montgomery, "Mineralogy of Pennsylvania," 1922, gives Ca(Mg0.63Fe0.37)(CO3)2, suggesting the mineral is Fe-containing dolomite. Heyl's report not examined, could be from a legitimate ankerite, however.
Habit:curved Rombohedral xtls
Colour:Yellowish white, frequently with a brown superficial coating
Quality for species:Good crystals or rich for species - important (!)
Confirmation
Validity:Unconfirmed/Questioned
