The Indiana Copper Company was organized in 1862. Work began a year later to dive an adit into the hillside. The mine sank an additional four shafts and a shallow test pit to explore the amygdaloid. In 1864, Shafts 1 and 2 encountered a rich lode that warranted the company to build a stamp mill. Financial difficulties forced the mine to shut down in 1865. The site sat idle until 1909 when the Indiana Mining Company was organized. The new company immediately began a diamond drilling program to locate economic ore on their property. After two years of exploration, the company ceased all operations.
Much of the piles have been removed, but copper and datolite can be found here. Micro collectors have also fared well on the piles.
