One of the oldest mines in the Alpha area, the Mastodon opened in 1881 as an open pit on ore outcrops, with underground works added later. The mine closed in 1895. In 1912 the property was added to the Balkan-Judson in order to work ore bodies on the western part of the property, although the original workings were not used. The Mastodon propoerty lease was surrendered in 1935, but stockpile shipments were made in 1942 by the Pittsburgh Coke and Iron Co.

The property description is NE Sec. 13 T42N-R33W, which is the 160 acres between N46ΒΊ2'10", N46ΒΊ2'37", W88ΒΊ22'0", and W88ΒΊ22'38".
