The Halliwell Mining Company operated between 1895 and 1908 and was one of the last attempts at commercial mining in the Porcupine Mountains. The mine sank two vertical and three inclined shafts into the Nonesuch Formation but failed to make a profit. One of the shafts was sunk on the Noble Vein; however, the vein never produced enough copper and the mine was closed permanently in 1908. Two of the caretakers remained at the site until the 1960’s when they passed away and the State of Michigan took possession. No collecting is allowed at the site.
