A very deep (>1400 m) base metal mine.
Syngenetic, submarine VMS type Cu-Zn deposit (discovered in 1958) significantly affected by regional metamorphism.
Open-pit mining 1962-1967 (finally stopped in 1975); underground mining since 1967. Mining activities are projected to end in 2019, but above-ground operations will continue until 2025.
Originally owned and operated by Outokumpu Co., but today by INMET.
