Monroe County is underlain mainly by Cambrian sedimentary rocks such as quartz sandstone. Ordovician dolomitic carbonates top the highlands in the southern half of the county. The dolostones are often quarried for road metal and other uses. Some remanent outliers of Cretaceous continental sediments (Windrow Formation)are known. The County is mostly in the Driftless Area, hence topography is dominated by bedrock resistance. Erosion has carved the rocks into scenic bluffs and glens (locally called coulees). The floor of Glacial Lake Wisconsin gives rise to some interesting topography in the northeastern corner of the county where Cambrian sandstone "sea stacks" and former islands in the lake are preserved as isolated bluffs, such as in Mill Bluff State Park.
