The Upper Ritter Quarry is located 4.5 miles west of highway 395 on the road following the Middle Fork of the John Day River to Ritter. The quarry was opened in the 1980's and worked sporadicaly every few years to gravel the roads in the area. The rock consists of vesicular and dense zones of a single basalt flow that is the lowest flow of the Miocene Picture Gorge Basalt (16 m.y.o.) in the Columbia River Basalt Group that rests on the ash beds of the John Day Formation.
