It is located in the region of Norðurland Vestra, in the central part of the country, 200 km northeast of Reykjavík, the capital of the country. Kotagil is located 492 meters above sea level.
The land around Kotagil is hilly in the northwest, but in the southeast it is mountainous. The highest area around is at an altitude of 861 meters and is 1 km west of Kotagil. The area around Kotagil is almost completely covered with grassland. In the region around Kotagil, mountains and valleys are incredibly common.
The climate is boreal. The average temperature is −3 °C. The warmest month is July, at 10 °C, and the coldest is December, at −10 °C.
