Comments from SIGEOM:
Comment — Year of discovery: 1900
Location reference: UTM coordinates (GM 58649) of a large excavation locate this site about 6.3 km east of Black Lake, on the eastern flank of the Red Hills, and 1.2 km west of Airport Road (267).
Following the 1992 mapping, it is noted that mineralization at the Stewart South, Hall, Lemelin, Morin and Hall Extension sites forms a north-south trending lineament.
Comment — lithology: The site features a large excavation and trenches cut into the dunite. The cumulate sequence of the Thetford Mines Ophiolitic Complex outcrops in the area. Chromite-serpentine dunite, serpentine wehrlite, serpentine pyroxenite and bedded gabbro are found. Local rodingite dykes intersect these lithologies. The host rock is a serpentinized dunite with cumulates, black to dark green in fresh fracture and buff in altered surface.
Comment — mineralization: Chromite occurs in disseminated to massive bands. Mineralization is essentially in bedded form, and chromite grain size averages around 1 to 2 mm.
In 1992, trenching and mapping at Stewart South and C-87-22 (hole drilled 180 m NW) revealed two zones of chromiferous mineralization at C-87-22. The first zone consists of bedded chromite. The second zone is Hall-textured and consists of lenses of massive chromite with nodules of sterile dunite. At the Stewart South site, a single disseminated chromite bed (2%) was observed.
Comment — production: 70 tonnes of ore were extracted in 1918. 25 tonnes of ore at 40% Cr2O3 (27.37% Cr) were mined from two excavations in 1942 and 1943.
