Kimberlite pipe was found by De Beers in 1969 but was initially thought to be small and low grade. Reassessed in 2003 revealed that the kimberlite was larger and of a higher grade than previously estimated by De Beers. A 15-year licence was granted in 2008 and was then sold in 2009 to a subsidiary of Lucara & renamed Karowe mine.
In 2015 three large diamonds were recovered, including one at 1,111 carats making it at the time the second-largest gem diamond ever found.
Part of the Orapa/Letlhakane Kimberlite district.
