Ordinary Chondrite (L4)
Fell, 6 February 1947; 2.3 kg
With an accompanying whistling sound a meteoritic stone fell during the afternoon onto the Lake Långhalsen ice and broke into 4 fragments. Mineralogy [prominent olivine (Fa24) and pyroxene (Fs20)], textures [chondrules, grains, and matrix], and chemistry [bulk iron (~22 wt%)] indicated an 'Olivine-bronzite chondrite' — today's L chondrite chemical group.
Långhalsen is one of 9 confirmed meteorite Swedish falls listed at the Meteoritical Bulletin Database as of late 2015. Of these, only Långhalsen and Lundsgård are listed as exactly 'L6' chondrites (Low bulk iron, largely equilibrated silicates and metal). The main mass is at Stockholm's Naturhistoriska riksmuseet.
