The Bulldog Gold Mine is 3 kilometres south-west of Laverton and just west of the Mary Mac mine. It is marked by a small open pit. Modern production extracted 158 037 tonnes of ore at 2.0 g/t yielding 10 904 ounces.
The early history of the mine was not found. An incomplete list of prospectors over an extended period was located, all with small crushings from the underground workings. This included D. Cahir and party 1915, E. Cooper and F. Lindsay 1921, J.G. Donaldson 1924, Sheridan and Bryant 1931, Wallace and party 1931.
In 1942, the mine is being operated by Gaspar (surname) and Nikola Skroza. The names would indicate they were possibly from Croatia originally. During World War Two, Croatia was in alliance with Nazi Germany, and fascist Italy. The ethnic cleansing of non Croats by the Ustase during the war shocked even senior members of Nazi Germany's S.S., and would give present day terrorist organisations a good run for their money. The Roman Catholic Church actively supported the group.
This led to suspicion Gaspar and Skroza, were not supporting the right team. Constable Anderson was sent to investigate. Lo and behold Anderson discovered explosives at the mine. Even a shotgun and cartridges.
At the subsequent court trial they pleaded guilty of possessing explosives and a firearm. The judge stated he took the matter seriously and it was not a technical matter. Being miners he declared, they should know the regulations affecting possession by aliens of explosives and firearms. Skroza was sentenced to two months imprisonment with hard labour, and Gasper who also owned the shotgun to six months.
It is a small example of the time when foreigners were held with suspicion. It does not take Einstein to realise a mine needs explosives, and it was common practice for the time, for miners to have a gun somewhere nearby to protect the gold. There are some places in the world which could take heed of this little story today.
