Carleton Talc Mine
A soapstonequarry, later a grit talc mine. Located 2Β½ miles West of Chester.
Started about 1894 by the Vermont Mineral Products Co., Inc. Operated by the American Soapstone Finish Company ca. 1916 (Jacobs, 1916).
Ultramafic tectonic deposit in Reading gneiss. Workings featured an oval pit 250 feet by 150 feet and about 200 feet deep.
NOTE: This mine no longer exists. The dumps were landscaped and a house built on the site. The mine hole itself is a pond in the back yard.
