A large area of heath, geest and woodland, extending southwest to south of Lüneburg. Most of the area is a nature reserve.

Minerals reported from here have usually been found in glacial erratics and gravel pits and originate in Scandinavia. Chips of flint are ubiquitous. In some hollows between the hills, diatomite deposits have formed in lakes.
