How to ContributeWhat means: status is "User gallery only”?

4th Dec 2017 17:08 UTCHans van t Zelfde

Hi

I’ve upload some photos, but the approval status is "User gallery only”.

What does it mean?

Also I can’t find this photo (8QT-Q31) in the location details.

Thanks

Hans

Hi Hans,

Could you tell me which photos this concerns?

Just copy the photo's URL (https://www.mindat.org/photo-XXXXX.html) and paste it in a reply to this message.

If I see the photos I can explain to you why they're user only or I can see whether that could be wrong.

Cheers,

Harjo

Thanks David!

Hans, are there any other photos that aren't being displayed site-wide?

4th Dec 2017 23:03 UTCHarjo Neutkens Manager

Hans, check them now, they should all be displayed site-wide now. The heulandite photo will remain user gallery for a short while before going site-wide because the edit data can show us what went wrong here. But it will be back displayed site-wide shortly.

Hello,

I am a new member to mindat and I recently tried to add a photo to the site, but it was classified as "user gallery only". I was curious, as to if this is a standard "waiting period" or if there is some kind of a problem with the entry. The specimen that I entered is number 9EN-UP8 and I will include a picture as an attachment. Any help or advice you could give would be appreciated.

Thank you for your time,

Eric Adolphson

Eric,

I am not an admin, so I cannot tell what is going on, but there is one thing I immediately noticed: if you were to cut your photo at the sides a little bit, it would be much nicer!

Nice specimen, however!

Cheers,

Branko

Hi Erik

Nice specimen but as Branko noted, cropping would improve the photo greatly, if you could upload one, or Branko’s? A manager moved it to user only for that main reason. There are a couple other issues. Firstly the location is very vague, saying just Fresno county. We have a location called Rock Haven, on Shaver lake, which may be better? Also I suspect it may be microcline rather than orthoclase?

Welcome to Mindat, Eric!

Agree with Branko here. Cropping the photo to eliminate the excess white space around the specimen would greatly improve the appearance of the photo. Also, as Ralph notes, if there is any question about the locality and/or identification of the specimen itself, those are red flags that will likely send a photo to the User Only gallery.

At the same time, if only the county is known as a locality, then that is ok and does not of itself preclude it from being site wide, particularly if it is from a locality where Mindat does not have any or only has a few photos.

You shouldn't add greater locality detail by guesswork. If more detailed information is known (e.g. from the fact that you collected the piece and know exactly where it is from) or it may be that it is from a locality not yet listed in Mindat then provide that info and someone will add the locality for you if necessary.

Eric, essentially the only reasons for this photo to be user gallery are the distracting background (which can be removed via cropping) and possibly the mineral Id itself as to whether it is microcline or orthoclase.

Nice specimen though.

Welcome Eric,

Same as above.

I would ad that there is a possibility to ad the dimensions of the specimen instead of the ruler.

Looks nicer too.

Nice specimen.

Regards.

Thanks to all for the advice, Eric
