I just saw this post - only a "bit" late - while searching for something else. Thanks for the kind words.
Like you, I am a firm believer in stereo. I think that stereo is always useful but particularly so in three situations (as you have amply demonstrated):
1. Micros with a busy backround (i.e. most micros). Stereo really helps to "bring out" the mineral of interest.
2. Photos of transparent xls using layering. Often the inclusions, and internal flaws and reflections make for a confusing mess when all is in focus. You can selectively blur the distractions. But I think that the untouched stereo view is generally much more interesting and informative - even exciting.
3. Complex aggregates such as fibrous and reticulated minerals such as behoite and cerussite - your cerussite photo is a great example!
