It was the Rasvumchorr mine according to the Russian northern newssite Severinform:

How about cut and paste it to babelfish yourself? ;-)

This is the translation via Babelfish:

On December 12 the chairman of the Murmansk Regional Duma Eugene directed in joint stock company of " " the telegram, in which it expressed deep condolences in connection with the tragic loss of miners at The mine, it transmitted the words of support and compassion to native and close ones of those been killed, and it also wished recovery to all victims with the explosion, transfers the site of Murmansk . As reported REGNUM, on December 11 in 20:40 msk at The mine with the production of the mechanized charging of bore holes by explosive thundered the unsanctioned explosion, fire and then burnt. At the moment of explosion there were found 18 people. 12 people are considered been killed. Criminal case for the article of " the disturbance of safety regulations with conducting of mountain " it is already excited. Consequence is conducted.

Not perfect, but it conveys the Idea. I think it was a coal mine.

Rasvumchorr is not a coalmine! It is an apatite mine, which might also produce some nepheline aluminium ore, as well as countless rare mineral specimen. It is both a large open cast mine, as well as an underground mine. The explosion occurred when a slurry of ammonium nitrate, aluminium powder and used oil, used as mining explosive, detonated prematurely. It is not clear to me wether this happened in the open cast part (as some Russian newspapers report) or in the underground part. Itar Tass reports that ' the ventilation system is working again', which would suggest an underground explosion to me.

How terribly sad.

I worked in the explosives business for many years and, generally, the type of explosive described is a fairly insensitive and relatively safe type. There are still many things that can go wrong to cause a premature detonation during transportation of such commercial explosives particularly fire on the delivery vehicle or carrying carrying initiation systems (sensitive) WITH the insensitive explosive. If they were charging holes, there are many more things that can cause a premature detonation, all related to heat, impact or friction imparted to the explosive/initiation system at the wrong time. No matter how safe the explosive is, it is still designed to do only one thing upon the right or wrong type of stimulus: detonate with immense force. Terrible when people are in close proximity.
