Mineral PhotographyMotorized Focus Stacking

19th Jul 2016 09:24 UTCOlivier Roth

Hi micro photo enthusiasts

If you ever wanted a motorized focus stacking rail – there is a Kickstarter campaign „StackRail for Focus Stacking“ where 3 types of such rails are offered for a relatively modest price.

The products make a good impression, but as always with Kickstarter there is some risk of delays, quality issues or even project failure.
Hurry if you’re interested – the campaign is in it’s final phase and will close by Thursday, July 21st, 2016 at 15:15 CEST.

I'm neither affiliated nor in any other contact to the founder of this campaign - I just thought, many of you might be interested.

Interesting...

My only concern with this system is that Stackshot is already supported by other stacking software (eg Helicon), so I'd be reluctant to invest in a system until they had third-party software support. Especially as their own software is PC only and I use Mac.

Hi Jolyon & Katya Ralph

There are two aspects to your concern:

a) control the Stackshot: For this they claim that a PC (via USB) or an Android device (via optional Bluetooth) are necessary. In the most recent post they anounce versions for Mac and iOS (www.kickstarter.com/projects/pylin/snaprail-for-focus-stacking/posts/1634336)

b) processing the stack of shots: For this any stacking software will do - you just transfer your photographs from your camera to the PC/Mac and feed them to your program of choice.

But you're right, there is uncertainty in all Kickstarter projects.

In my opinion this is reinventing the wheel. The original Stack Shot rail is not stiff enough which is very important for high quality photos. The KR 20 from THK is much more stiffer and is compatible with the Stack Shot stepper motor and control als well as the Stack Master of Rainer Ernst. The Stack Master has a higher resolution due to a integrated gear. The perfect solution for stacking at a very reasonable price. The here discussed solution has no gear and is by far less stiffer. The market demand is so low that there is no space for too many different solutions. I fear the kickstarters will burn money.
