Identity HelpBlue Garnet

13th Dec 2009 14:00 UTCDanny Jones Expert

I am at the Norcross GA show. One of the dealers has what he is calling "Blue Garnets". I seem to remember back some time ago there was a discussion of this stone but cant fine the thread. Can any one help me out. The crystal structure is right for garnets and it is in a mica matrix. Location is given as Madagasca.

Thanks everyone for any help.

PS I am not sure I would call the color "blue" but is not in the red/yellow/orange range.

Hey Danny,

Take a look at this link, under the "Properties" paragraph. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garnet

They specifically mention blue garnet, found in the late 1990s at Bekily, Madagascar.

Check to make sure it really is garnet and not fluorite!

I have three faceted Blue/Green Color changer garnets.

They go red/purple indoors, like alexandrite.

They are from Madagascar, and came out in about 2000 or so.

The biggest stone about 2/3rds of a carat and has hairlike inclusions, rutile?

Thanks for the link Rob.

All I had before for locality was Madagascar.
