Techniques for CollectorsRemoving calcite from vanadinite

18th Oct 2018 12:03 UTCAurum Williamson

Hi everyone,

I just got a nice specimen of vanadinite, but most of it is encased in calcite. Removing the calcite would make it a great piece. What is the best way to remove the calcite without damaging the vanadinite? Maybe a slow soak in vinegar?

Thanks for your help, Keith

Start with vinegar, and remove the specimen as soon as bubbling stops. Shouldn't take more than a few hours at most.

Without seeing the specimen, it may not be calcite. Many of these Vanadinites appear to be covered in a "cream to grey sludge" (looks like mine mud) and I don't believe that there is there is any way of removing it as it is simply how the crystals were formed.

If it is Calcite, then as Steve mentioned it should work a treat.

Perhaps a photo next time.
