Mineral ShowsNY/NJ Gem & Mineral Show 4/12-14

19th Feb 2013 12:11 UTCSister Elias Freeman, OSB.Sol

Would anyone who has been to this show before kindly provide a little bit of information about what this show is like? Is it totally pricey? Will there be any piles of rough to go through? Is it mostly gems and jewelry? For example, would a 14-year-old who hunts rocks every chance she gets find the show great or over her head for the most part? I know the site very well, because I've been to many events there, even some traveling mineral shows, but I don't know anything about what the show itself is like.

Many thanks,

Sister Elias

Hello There!

In my opinion, it is ABSOLUTELY worthwhile to attend the show ESPECIALLY if you are planning on taking an enthusiastic young collector! Young collectors need all the exposure they can get to this wonderful hobby/science! The show is still a "new" show but I certainly think it has momentum to become a great and significant show. There is a strong showing of mineral dealers, with not as much focus on the beads, jewelry, etc. as you might see at other shows.

- just my two cents...

This is only the second year for this show and the first one at this hall. It appears from their website they have a wide selection of dealers including some very high end ones. With this number of dealers I'm sure there will be something for everyone, from the newest "pebble pup" with $5 stuffed in a pocket, to the "high end" collectors looking for that special specimen for their collection. If this youngster has never seen the wide selection of NJ and NY minerals found over the last 150 years, you owe it to them just to see the display cases. I think the fluorescent exhibit alone will be worth the price of admission. By all means, come, look and learn. I'm coming all the way from Texas to see and photograph the exhibits and visit with friends. I grew up in NJ and have a fond affection for the minerals of the state.
