Mineral ShowsMAJOR CHANGES FOR THE 2013 BLOOMINGTON INDIANA ROCK SHOW

20th Apr 2013 15:50 UTCBob Harman

A heads up notice that there are major changes in store for this 2013 year's June Bloomington Indiana rock show. Due to long standing disagreements between the sponsoring club show people and the Monroe County Indiana fair board, the 2013 Bloomington Indiana rock show scheduled for June 21 - 23 has been cancelled. Tentatively the show has been rescheduled for the first weekend in August at the Lawrence County fairgrounds. Final plans will be announced following the final negotiations and signing of a contract with that group. All those having had an interest in past Bloomington rock shows please bear with these changes and watch for future announcements within the next month or so.

The Bloomington Rock Show at the Monroe County fairgrounds has been one of the Midwest's largest casual shows over more than 20 years. With plenty of good free parking, camping facilities, no admission charges and plenty of dealers of all types it was very well attended and very favorably reviewed on this website several years ago. Hopefully the new venue will come to pass and be just as good for all attendees. Watch this and other sites for show updates over these next few weeks and months. CHEERS.........BOB

The Bloomington show has been rescheduled with a different venue starting this 2013 year.

THE SHOW WILL BE HELD AUGUST 9 - 11 , 2013 AT THE LAWRENCE COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS.

This is Southwest of the town of Bedford, Indiana or about 30 miles South of the former venue of the Bloomington Show at the Monroe County fairgrounds. There is plenty of free parking. There are plenty of camping spaces and the show has no admission charge. With over 80 dealers of all types we hope to see everyone there! CHEERS..........BOB

The fairgrounds in Lawrence county were nice, but the show did not compare to past Bloomington shows. There were way less vendors. The variety was not as wide and although there were a few nice stalls, most of the stuff there paled in comparison to the Bloomington shows. As a Bloomington native living 5 minutes from the fairgrounds, I was able to visit the show multiple times. In 2013 I took the trip to Lawrence county and ended up regretting it for the most part. An annual tradition for my family might be ending. I still plan on going to the 2014 show but if it turns out to be as poor as last year then I don't plan on attending again. Waste of gas and time. No offense to the vendors intended. Just saying that the Monroe County Fairgrounds really screwed this one up by not allowing the show to be in B-Town. Hopefully there will be a better show for 2014. Maybe with the changes it was hard for some vendors to get there in 2013. I was hoping it would be back in Bloomington but it looks like Lawrence county might be a permanent change unfortunately.

Dear Suzannah;

You, not being a dealer/trader, don't realize what goes on, MONTHS before a show; it's these reasons, many, BETTER dealers didn't all show up - only those close enough & in an "economic deadzone" (showwise) could make it there.

1) Almost immediately after a show, at a "good" spot, a dealer must plan for that show, again, next yr; in order to do that, they must get a contract &/or a statement, from the show committee, that there IS going to be a show, &, that it's going to be in that place or another (pre-arranged). If this doesn't happen, a dealer has to put that show (no matter how well they did) on the "possible/maybe list"; it can still be a go, but, they must get SOME info, within only 3 - 4 months, to make a decision, FOR the show. A dealer has to plan their shows for: sales (of course); swapping stock with other dealers; buying new minerals; & collecting, trimming, cleaning, labeling & boxing of self-collected stock. Even without a regular full-time job, this eats TIME! That's why the long lead-in & the need for near immediate confirmation.

2) A full time dealer has it little easier: they don't collect, however, they still need to restock, like crazy; this also means they need a "warehouse" location (barn on their property). That dealer lives on their sales, &, the slightest "yucky" in a shows works, that's longer than "immediately after the show", means they won't count on that show, at all; they live & die by that schedule & nothing can be allowed to slow it down. That dealer just won't be there.

Either reason, it'll be the dealers, that have to travel more than a couple hrs., who won't make that show, &, that almost always means a substantial "quality dealer" drop; that's why 1st shows & 1st shows at a new location "aren't the best". Not saying some good dealers won't be there; however, it won't have a lot of them.

I believe, just from the showing from last yr, for a new location & time, it was GREAT; I predict, that this yr., it'll be FAR better - even the new timing is better!

The "Bloomington Show", actually now "THE LAWRENCE COUNTY ROCK SHOW" will be JUNE 27 - 29 at the Lawrence County fairgrounds. Free parking and free admission with plenty of room for camping and food available.

Despite what Suzannah said and as Steve G noted the show will again be bigger and better than ever. Better AIR CONDITIONED venue with more dealers than ever. Come on to our show and judge for yourselves! See you there. CHEERS…….BOB

Thanks for the heads-up, Bob! The show has always been on my radar, but life always seems to get in the way. This year will be the year!

Dear Bob & all;

DANG!!! I just realized, I CAN'T MAKE THIS SHOW! I hate that they've changed the show date; now it conflicts (yet again) with the Gilsum Show! Just when I thought I could do BOTH shows, one after another, they're back to being on the same date; that was why I had to stop< going to the show when it moved to Bloomington. It used to be earlier than Gilsum, by one week, when it was originally at Bedford. This is SO unfair! Wish you folk a good time.

The "BLOOMINGTON SHOW" now actually the LAWRENCE COUNTY ROCKCLUB SHOW starts this Friday June 27 at 10 am at the Lawrence County fairgrounds. Plenty of free parking, free admission, and many dealers. In fact more dealers than ever. The show goes thru Sunday June 29. Hope to see some of you there!

I will have a table top display case with Indiana specimens that will change daily. I also will have some pictures of my daily display case and show dealers posted within a short time of the show's end. CHEERS…….BOB

The "Bloomington Show", actually now the "Lawrence County Rock Club Show' is now over. It seemed well attended and some dealers, as usual, did well while others, as usual, complained. There were 3 buildings filled with dealers as well as a number of outside tent dealers. The largest building was air conditioned while the 2 smaller buildings were not. It was warm and humid, about normal for southern Indiana in late June. It rained a bit on one day, but not for very long and most of the weekend was dry.

I had my usual array of good quality self collected Indiana geodes and completely sold out by Saturday late afternoon!

I also had a table top display case with different hi quality examples daily for 4 days. Several pix of the show are on this thread and some pix of my display specimens are on the "Midwest Geode" thread.

The first picture is early in set up, the second shows my for sale tables and display case in the foreground and the third picture is during the show with my display case and prominent Midwest field collector David Rush (with hands folded) down the table next to me. CHEERS……..BOB

The 2015 LAWRENCE COUNTY ROCK CLUB SHOW, formerly the Bloomington Show, will be held at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds June 25 - June 28. This is the 50th anniversary of this show.

There is plenty of free parking and the show admission is free. There are camping facilities and food vendors. Plenty of dealers of all types are signed up. For those wanting to do some sightseeing, Bloomington with its museums and the campus of Indiana University is only 20 miles North of the show venue. In addition, several field collecting sites, including the Harrodsburg road cuts are less than 1 hour drive from the show venue. I hope to see you there!

On a down note this year's show may be the last as the show chairman says he is retiring from his position after this show and no one seems ready to step up into his place……….

So, best make this show as it just might be our swan song. CHEERS…….BOB

Today I helped set up the 2015 Lawrence County Rock Club show…..formerly the Bloomington show. This year the show has over 100 dealers at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds. Plenty of free parking and free show admission. The large fairgrounds exposition building is pleasantly air conditioned. Hope to see you there Friday June 26 - Sunday June 28. CHEERS…..BOB
