GeneralDr Frederick Pough

I am sad to bring you news that Dr Frederick Pough has died, just two weeks short of his 100th birthday. He died of a heart attack after a fall.

Dona Leicht from Kristalle has just informed me, and said they were planning a big birthday celebration for him.

Yes indeed. It happened right here at the Rochester Mineralogical Symposium, so dr. Pough ended his long and productive life probably as he would have wanted to: surrounded by friends and mineralogical admirers!

Thanks Alfredo,

I just hope I can have such a long and productive life in the mineralogical community.

His was my first mineral book. Sad news indeed.

I have long treasured his Field guide and had had a few conversations with him over the years. He will be dearly missed, as I believe he was sharp as a tack right up to these final years...

I too am glad that he died in the midst of his friends, engaging in his favourite thing...what more could one ask.

George Burns and Bob Hope did the same and lived about as long too..both icons in their respective fields as well.

Dr. Pough was a 'regular' at the Blanchard mines here in New Mexico. Sam & Vera have some wonderful stories about Dr. Pough...my favorite is that he would always bring a box of fried chicken as a gift to the aging Mrs. Blanchard who still lived in the old house at the base of the hill (outside the entrance of the old haulage tunnel)....that house is almost totally ruined now. I'll be at the Blanchard in a couple of weeks....I plan to take a flower or two in his memory (and hers!!...you'd have to visit the site to understand how tough a woman she was!!!). To Sam & Vera Dr. Pough was simply Fred.

It is with the deepest regret that I must announce the passing of Dr. Frederick H. Pough at age 99. Dr. Pough was arriving at the Rochester Mineralogical Symposium about noon of Friday, April 7th., when he suddenly collapsed in the hotel lobby. He was rushed to a hospital and later passed about 4:00 P.M. His son and daughter were with him at the time of his passing. Their request was that the proceedings continue. He was to be the guest of honor for a 100th birthday celebration a month and a half early due to the timing of the event. "He was where he wanted to be and doing what he wanted to do among friends." There are few of us in the US who did not start with Dr. Pough's field guide to minerals. May he rest in peace.

Hello there,

As I will be writing up the obituary for Dr Pough in the next issue of JCK, would any of you be willing to send me personal comments about Dr. Pough's contributions to mineralogy/gemology? Dr. Pough was gemstone editor for JCK I believe it was during the 1970's...

Thank you all very much in advance.
