Identity Helpyellow mineral fom slag locality

29th Apr 2006 22:18 UTCPierre Le Roch Expert

has somebody even seen this mineral in slag locality ? (this comes from Poullaouen,Bittany, France); it seems like a pile of diamond-shaped or triangular yellow strips;

thanks for any idea

Wulfenite?

May be Wulfenite.

Is it really possible to find (neoformed) wulfenite in slags ?

6th May 2006 16:15 UTCPeter Andresen Expert

Lots of interesting minerals listed from that locality, but no wulfenite... My first thoughts went in the direction of a jarosite group mineral, but I see that wüstite is also found there, maybe it's an iron oxide/hydroxide... But basicly I'm just making guesses, do you have any chance to do any tests on the mineral?

Best regards

Peter A

PS. here is the wüstite from the same locality...(I know the crystalls look pretty different)

Hello,

Not unlike the Bazhenovite xls found at a slag locality near Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg.

The colour in your pics is identical, and what you mentioned about 'diamond-shaped' platy xls sounds very similar.

At least, it's certainly not wulfenite. The crystals do neither match its habit, nor its symmetry.

on wich website can i see photos from Esch-sur-Alzette ,Luxembourg ?

Hello,

Here's a poor pic of my specimen from Esch-sur-Alzette. The Bazhenovite occurs as clusters of orange platy monoclinic xls with 'diamond-shaped' to (almost) psedohexagonal form. Max dimenson of the xls is about 1.5mm, and the larger xls tend to have a more 'diamond-shaped' cross-section, while the smaller and slightly paler yellow-orange ones tend to be pseudohexagonal. The colour is actually just like the xls in your photos, and especially the cross section in your 3rd photo looks very similar too. Also, the Bazhenovites have a perfect, almost micaceous basal cleavage and show pearly 'diamond-shaped' cleavage faces. Especially some of the thicker xls look somewhat like 'books' of stacked thin platy xls, with micaceous cleavage. Hope that helps.

possible to be very close of nealite, thorikosite or "Barattite", something with iron inside

Nealite and thorikosite have totally different xl shapes, however.

Ecdemite is a possibility - it's tetragonal. The locality page for Poullaouen has a photo of an ecdemite with a similar color. Ecdemite is not on the mineral list, though.
