Fakes & FraudsWatch out for scams!

11th Feb 2016 11:38 UTCBob Harman

Several days ago a "new user" started a Mindat thread requesting freely donated mineral specimens after giving a (very unlikely to me) story of his apartment being robbed and his mineral specimens stolen. I thought this unlikely story might be nothing more than a scam.

I am now posting this today as another "new user" has just posted a similar request for freely donated mineral specimens on Jordi Fabre's mineral forum. Even fees and postage might not be paid by the requesting individual. To my mind an interesting coincidence of postings. Personally, I doubt that any donated mineral specimens will go into a collection. They just might be resold. After all only 10 freely donated examples resold for $10 each = $100. A nice start for a scammer.

This is not a mineral exchange or swapping request. Be wary! CHEERS.......BOB

Bob, it is exactly the same name used on Mindat (Theodore Hansen)...could you alert Jordi's website? (I am not a member.)

Edit: I've just seen your message there - thank you.
