Mineral ShowsNJ/NY Mineral Show 2016 - some advice for first mineral show visit

19th Mar 2016 03:31 UTCRobert Darabos

I'm attending the upcoming NY/NJ show in Edison, New Jersey in early April.

It's my first mineral show. I have no clue what to expect.

Any advice or ideas?

I'm not after anything rare or expensive.

$20 and under per specimen is about the amount I'd spend.

Robert,

That show will have many interesting things to see. The Franklin/Sterling Hill people set up a fabulous fluorescent mineral display you do not want to miss. There are great dino displays and the dealers run the gambit from rare to common and low end to VERY expensive. Bring a drool bucket. Do be careful with your wallet in the crowd. It has been a new problem at shows lately. Do check out the local club tables if you do not yet belong. Plan your time to be able to see it all since this is your first time. Enjoy it as a new experience and take some breaks to clear your head once in a while. If you can't find enough inexpensive specimens then you should check out the south jersey rock shop. It is really difficult to tell someone how to see a show, you just need to go and do it. Have fun,

Gary

Cruise all the show dealers before you start buying things. Odds are, the specimen won't be sold by the time you come back.

For those who don't know about the show, it will be held April 8-10 at the Raritan Center on Sunset Avenue in Edison, NJ. I can promise that there will be a great deal of low to medium priced specimens available.

We are packed up and heading to the show. Don't forget to check out the 22 display cases of exhibits this year. We've got everything from NJ agates to worldwide fluorites and radioactive minerals. There will be several cases of outstanding NJ zeolites and traprock minerals, most of them should be in a museum. Dick Bostwick will also be displaying a case of extremely rare Franklin/Sterling Hill minerals. There will also be a "Local Minerals Area" with tons of local NY/NJ/PA minerals, something that has been missing from previous shows. As always, the Franklin Mineral Museum and the Sterling Hill Mining Museum will have a special room with many cases of fluorescent minerals. The members of the cast of "Prospectors" will be there, come out and meet them.

Yeah, sorry about that. Obviously, you found it. The 21 cases of daylight exhibits are breathtaking! Many thanks to all who volunteered, every case is great! There is one day left, so if you haven't been there yet, you are missing out on a great show. There are still lots of affordable minerals to be found in the local minerals area. Gary
