Field CollectingMulvaney Property, Rose Road

10th Jul 2016 21:51 UTCAlfred L. Ostrander

Saturday, June 8, 2016. Getting tired of too much sedimentary rock, several family members and I headed for the Rose Road digs near Pitcairn, NY. A lot of fun was had getting some blue calcite and a blue garden rock for the family matriarch.

Hello All,

Just an update on the Rose Road outcrops.

First stop was turning some really big rocks into manageable sizes at the blue calcite boulder site. Lots of assorted sizes and one large garden rock for the family matriarch.

Next stop was the original outcrop workings often referred to as the Mulvaney property. Too my surprise, someone was working the face of the outcrop with a backhoe. I was allowed to collect on the right side (from the road) of the property. The intent of the heavy equipment was to remove the rubble from the base of the outcrop and also do some serious collecting. I got several specimens of green diopside and some plates of albite crystals.

Moving on to the purple diopside mound, we had a lot of fun locating some fluorescent scapolite. I also found some blue fluorescing material that I am not sure what it is. Brought home some of the phlogopite and it does fluoresce under my non portable sw lamp.

All of this to initiate a new nephew in law to dirty rockhounding and to celebrate my father's 93rd birthday. Dad supervised and watched birds more than anything but it was sure fun to have a great day on the rocks

.

For anyone wondering if I got the outcrops backward, No. We drove to the tower at the end of the road and worked our way back out.

Best Regards,

Al O
