GeneralReports of spam attack

23rd May 2018 09:30 UTCErik Vercammen Expert

Yesterday, Mindat suffered from a spam attack. What is the best way to help the administrators in such case: report every single spam message, or just give a more general warning?

Most of the time one or more managers is working to delete the spammer and messages within 15 minutes of the postings. If something persists for more than a few hours, I would report it in the Errors and Mistakes forum.

Well at 9.25 am today 9 1/2 pages of spam crap!

Actually there were 700+ spam messages

Would it not be possible to limit the number of posts within a certain time limit.

For example. No more than 5 posts per hour..

Only problem was that there were about 20 new spammer accounts set up.

One wonders what type of mind gets pleasure out of doing that

It appears to be a simplified East Asian character set.

"One wonders what type of mind gets pleasure out of doing that" Its all done for money.

Unfortunately the system we use for the message board is old, not very good and not really properly supported any more. We would love to replace it with a modern system that is better supported but that will take a long time.

Until then we will have to try our best to reduce the likelihood of spammers abusing the system by making registration harder and Requiring email validation before activating the account

Frankly, Jolyon - whatever it takes.

Thanks to the admins for cleaning up the mess.
