GeneralSerandite collecting in Canada?

13th Jul 2019 23:37 UTCJim Bradley

Heading to Bancroft in August by way of Montreal and was wondering if anyone had an open spot to collect serandite xls? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Jim

Hi Jim, I'm not so sure you will find many localities in the area of Bancroft for collecting serandite or wollastonite. York River is off limits for collecting and it is rather close to Bancroft, you may have to venture further out to find a place to collect. You may find something here at Silver Queen mine. https://www.mindat.org/loc-34808.html. Fortunately you are asking in the right place. Someone here may have better information than myself, my search only turned up a couple localities for wollastonite. Good luck Jim and hope you have a great trip when you make it to the Bancroft area.

Hi Jim, with some more reading it looks like the Silver Queen Mine is in a provincial park. Sorry no collecting I'm sorry to say.

Hopefully someone else may have a lead for you to check out. Good luck Jim.

I don’t really know any spots in Bancroft where you can find Serandite. That’s more of a Mont St. Hilaire thing. You can go to MSH, but it’s not as easy as it used to be. Also, you HAVE to be lucky to find one. Again, it’s not as easy as it used to be. I know this because I was there last year and I almost found NOTHING. I only found one Serandite there in my life at MSH. Sorry.

Thank you guys for the responses. I've still got a little bit of time for some more research . One of my digging buddies is the one with the dreams of a big serandite xl and I told him see if I could figure something out.

Hi,

Only 2 serandite occurrences in Canada, according to Mindat - both are east/northeast on Montreal.

Mont St-Hilaire is essentially closed to collecting, and big serandites are few and far between there. Varennes has mineralogy similar to MSH, but serandites there are TINY.

Johannes — MSH is not closed to collecting. As I’ve stated, you can still go there, but it’s not easy as it used to be. The current owner is (currently) strict with other mineral collectors. For starters, you need to join a mineral club to go and you can only collect on the dumps that the workers have made for you. Currently, you can’t collect on the cliffs, where people can find the good stuff.

Jim — Tell your friend this: if he wants to collect Serandite, he needs to join the French Montreal Mineral Club in order to go to MSH. But remember, IT’S CURRENTLY NOT THAT EASY TO FIND ONE.

Thank you Sean I will pass this on to him.
