Hi Sophia,

At first I was going to say that you have an agate, but I don't think it is.  I think it is a silicified sandstone.  The sparkles might be grains of clear quartz . . . they are too small to tell from the photo (even when it is enlarged).  Interesting piece.

The sparkles "could" also be fine mica bits, especially if we're dealing with a clastic sandstone.

Looks like a layer of small, intergrown quartz crystals in the rock.  The sparkles could be light reflecting off of the interfaces between the crystals.

Great photos, Sophia.  I an more convinced that the sparkles are from tiny quartz crystals . . . probably intergrown, as suggested by Bret.

Don, I'm not right convinced of your quartz theory. The surface is cut and polished, so the source of the sparcling effect must be located below the surface. We also concur that the main mass is quartz. However, for a sparkling effect is needed a transition between different RI's. I don't also think that it is caused by 'cracks' - one should see interference effects.
I see a spongelike web of inclusions in the quartz mass. No clue what it could be, but *maybe* mica.
