Improving Mindat.orgphoto search improvement

3rd Dec 2019 04:11 UTCHerwig Pelckmans Expert

I noticed Mindat sometimes has a photo of a mineral from a location, but the photo icon does not show and neither can the photo be found using Photo Search. Especially the latter should be fixed.

Example: this photo also has schoonerite as a mineral on the photo: photo-755574
=> the mineral list of Folgosinho does not have a photo icon for schoonerite (I know this has been a flaw for a long time).
=> to my surprise, I could not find this photo when doing a Photo search with "schoonerite Portugal". Apparently the programming behind this search recognizes schoonerite as a mineral name and consequently no longer does a search for the string schoonerite in the description of the photo. Which is sad, because if it did, the photo would have been found.
I tried working around this flaw by searching with "from portugal schoonerite", but that gave the same result as before: no photos found.

So my request: if it is possible, please have the Photo search also do a search for the mineral name in the description of the photos.
Hope the above is clear, if not, let me know.

At the moment the search only brings up photos if they have the mineral listed as the first mineral in the photo. This will change in the future, but to do so requires some more significant changes to the way we store this information and is unlikely to happen before mid 2020 at the earliest, sorry!

Hi Herwig, there is a work around but it's limited to the country level.  Do a locality search for a country, then go to that page.  Click on "photos" under the country, then "all photos".  On the page that comes up you can now search for a mineral by keyword.

I know this isn't pretty (you're limited to searching one country at a time), but it works.

Actually, it can be done with the standard 'Mineral Photos' section on the locality page.

Change search to 'All mineral fields' and hit 'filter search' to update the mineral list.

Now you'll see Schoonerite on the mineral list and you can search.

 Dear Kevin and Jolyon,
Thanks for specifying these work arounds; they will surely be very helpful in the future!
Cheers, Herwig
