Field CollectingLutz Quarry, Wisconsin

22nd Jul 2016 16:22 UTCYalmer F Primeau Expert

Hello,

Does anyone have any information on this quarry? I have heard of some very interesting and odd minerals being found here (smithsonite, cerussite, cuprite, hemimorphite) but I cannot find any more information than what is listed here on mindat. Any information about location, collecting, or landowners would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi Yalmer,

I was going to refer you to a couple of local collectors in that area, then I noticed the following line on the locality page:

"Highway 44 near Oshkosh. Sec 29 T18N R16E. Site has been reclaimed."

Sorry I didn't your post sooner, Yalmer.

Yes, Lutz Quarry at the corner of Knapp and Florida Streets in Oshkosh is now "Quarry Park". It was filled in and turned into a city park. Back in 2010, there was work done to the vent system to prevent gas from building up underground. Even today if you drive past the park, you will see pipes sticking out of the ground and no trees. Bottom line, no chance of collecting there.

Ah I see. Thank you for the information!
