Field CollectingNewbies going to Tory Hill

23rd Aug 2016 18:55 UTCJohn Collins

Hi All,

Next week, I'm taking two friends (newbies) on a mineral hunting venture in the Tory Hill Ontario area. Of course, I'll be taking them to Millar's Mine (and I know about the road!!)

I am considering one other site; possibly Wilberforce Moly. Mine or the Saranac Mine (if still accessible).

Do any of you have any current information about these latter two sites or somewhere else you could suggest in the area that would be more suitable for successful results.

Thanks in advance,

John

Hi John, these are quite good and have some different mineral potential from Millar's mine:

Grace Lake (Burleigh Road) roadcut, Monmouth Township, Haliburton Co., Ontario, Canada

Schickler fluorite occurrence, Cardiff Township, Haliburton Co., Ontario, Canada

A bit further away, but impressive to newbies is the Beryl Pit in Quadeville

Hi John, if you are going to Millar's Mine you can cover two spots at once as the Gibson Rd east occurrence (akas Titanite Hill) is basically on the other side of the road (North side)

Matt is right a about Schickler about as well. You need to get a permit to visit it however (free). The permit is available at Agnews general store right in Wilberforce. They can also give you a permit for the Desmont Mine as well. I am not sure about Sarnac for newbies as it is located near the township dump. Plenty of Bears there during the summer which my turn off your newbies. A fall visit there maybe better.

Like they said.

Those are great locations. Here's an Apatite from the Schickler Fluorite Occerance.

Thanks for the ideas. I've been to the Schickler site but it is a hkke getting to it. The Grace Lake and possibly the Beryl Pit are good suggestions.

Regards,

John

P.S. I'll post an update when we get back.

John, if you do go to the Wiberforce _Tory Hilll area you might as well show them the road cut Essonville RD cut. Collecting is tricky due to the nature of the rock but seeming the minerals in situ might be interesting for the newbies.
