MineralsFluor-uvite-Uvite Series

4th Apr 2020 16:47 UTCŁukasz Kruszewski Expert

"Uvite" search redirects to Uvite Series. Please change it. The true end member, called UVITE, was approved. It now functions here as "Uvite (true end member)" because I was unable to add it as UVITE because "Uvite" is matched with "Uvite Series".

It got messed up because Uvite Series was listed as a variety. I think it got into some circular logic and was overloading our server.

Uvite (OH-dominant end-member)
Are all those considered just uvite?
The locations will have to be manually changed in the locality/mineral table.

Uvite mess fixed (I kept "Uvite (OH-dominant end-member)" as a synonym, for the time being at least).

Now we only need a good photo of a reliably analysed specimen.

EDIT: Will add more occurrences reported in the recent tourmaline literature.

At some point I can add a photo of uvite (OH-dominant; with just 0.20 apfu F) in talc from Brumado (it's atypical, as the undifferentiated "uvite" in magnesite from there seems more common with collectors), that I've used as a B isotope standard. I have photomicrographs of it on my computer already, but to snap photos of the rock, the remnants are in my office at school.

I'm a collector and trying to follow along with your uvite discussion. I have a "uvite" in
magnesite from Brumado. Would it be helpful for me to upload it someplace? Though I really am not sure where as the whole series vs. end-member thing has me a bit confused.

Ca-Mg tourmalines from Brumado are either OH-dominant (uvite) or F-dominant (fluor-uvite). Although fluor-uvite is much more abundant at the locality, dealers tend to just traditionally label everything "uvite" (and some tourmalines might not even belong to that series... some dravites are also present there).

Very few specimens destined for the collector market are analyzed, and since tourmalines may be zoned anyway, it might not do a lot of good to bother analyzing everything in any case. It also doesn't help that the IMA originally considered "uvite" as the F-dominant end-member, and later changed their mind and decided the root name should go with the rarer OH-dominant species (so watch out topaz... your days without a "fluor-" prefix are numbered... lol).

Chances are your specimen is probably really fluor-uvite. But to be on the safe side, if your sample is unanalyzed for F-OH content and you opt to upload it, please upload it as "Fluor-uvite-Uvite series" (https://www.mindat.org/min-4126.html), which covers the full range of compositions from all-F to all-OH and everything in between.
