PhotosDissonance photo / caption

24th Oct 2020 09:22 UTCBeppe Finello Expert

Can anyone explain to me what exactly are Dufrénite and Chalcosiderite in this photo? In the caption the author mentioned only the Dufrénite. I believe that this obvious dissonance should be corrected.

I think the caption should read "Tabular crystals of Chalcosiderite on Dufrénite etc."

Although the photo is certainly an adequate representation of the species present, there are a couple of other reasons in addition to the incomplete caption why this photo should not have been a POTD selection.

It may not have a razor-sculpted sharpness but it is still a good didactic image of the Chalcosiderite species, with an intelligible representation of the crystalline forms and its characteristic streaks. (the same thing can not be said for dufrenite) This POTD in my humble opinion is definitely a better choice than the fields in bloom and the sea at sunset to which we are unwillingly getting used to in this last period.

I agree with Beppe.

So it's ok to have eye candy minerals but not eye candy localities?

25th Oct 2020 09:21 UTCKevin Hean

Hi Debbie
I just knew you would chime in about Springbok :-)

I do agree that this image should not have been chosen while the description was inadequate.

The caption is fine now.  Thank you to whoever corrected it

Have added further information to the caption.

I added a bit, but we need to be better at checking before hitting the potd button.
