For the map fans, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency has a Flickr file with a bunch of declassified maps, some of which are amazingly detailed, (and presumably, now Public Domain) at:

I'm attaching an example map of Afghanistan (1999) that's one of the most detailed I have seen. (This was reduced from the orginal 122 MB to 8 MB so I could post it here).
