GeneralPetr Cerny past away on April 7th 2018

9th Apr 2018 15:49 UTCRoy Kristiansen Expert

Petr Cerny past away silently on April 7th at the age of 84.

He was the greatest of all pegmatologists in the modern world, with an exceedingly long list of publications.

He started his carrier at the University of Manitoba, shortly after the escape from the invation in

Czechslovakia 1968. He had an enormous influence on pegmatologists around the world, and had many

students and Ph.D. students.

I had the first communication with him early 1970, and he was in Norway in 1989.

I was lucky to visit him in his home during the GAC-MAC meeting i in Winnipeg 2013. At that time he

already suffered from Parkinson decease, and along with many other severe obstacles in his life

it's remarkable how he manage to survive to a age of 84.

An exceptional strong and acknowlegdeable person.

Pax vobiscum !

Thanks for that posting Roy and very sorry to learn of Petr's passing.

I have a memory of him attending a rare earth minerals conference (London) and field excursion in Cornwall led by Dr Chris Halls (see death notice below) and myself in 1993.

The whole party were so fascinated by the coastal exposures on the beaches and cliffs around Cape Cornwall and Botallack that we completely forgot about the time and some of the more elderly members of the group including Petr were almost fainting for lack of lunch. Eventually we made it back to the bus at about 3.30 and had food by 4pm. Everyone recovered and we retired to The Kings Arms in St Just later before returning to our base in self-catering 'wigwams' later.

RIP Petr and Chris H, both will be missed.

Cernyite was discovered in one of the Black Hills pegmatites. I imagine the type specimen came from NW collector Noble Witt. I think he had the World's supply in his basement. I only have a few pieces. I hope his relatives did not just dump his minerals after Noble's death. The same goes for me, too.
