Mineral ShowsHGMS Mineral ID Workshop
11th Jun 2015 00:59 UTCHouston Gem & Mineral Society
Have you ever wanted to get better at mineral identification? Still having trouble telling quartz from calcite? Do you want to know how to identify the rocks in that outcrop you stop at all the time? The Mineral Study Section of the Houston Gem & Mineral Society has just the thing for you. We have scheduled a workshop for Saturday, June 27 at the HGMS Clubhouse from 2 - 5 pm. Stephen Blyskal will be leading the id session with Nathalie Brandes providing a PowerPoint presentation. We will have sets of minerals and rocks for you to examine and test. Plus you can bring in that mystery rock and/or mineral and have one of our experts try to id it. Let us know if you will be attending at mineral@hgms.org.

Our Mineral Section does not meet in the summer for regularly scheduled meetings. Instead, we hold a couple of summer workshops that teach about various aspects of earth science. Over the years, we've taught basic field techniques, an intro to metal detectors, and other topics that have helped our members become (hopefully) better collectors. We have a lot of fun with these and are some of our most popular gatherings outside of our holiday parties.
I would highly recommend anyone in the Houston, Texas area that is interested in learning more about how to ID minerals to come on out Saturday, June 27 at 2 p.m. and have some fun!
