On April 29th the Kalamazoo Geological and Mineral Society(KGMS) will be kicking off their 57th Rock and Mineral Show. Over the past few years the KGMS show has expanded from 11,000 sq. ft. to 20,000 sq. ft. of show space.
The theme this year is Dinosaurs. Get up close and personal with Sue, a full-size skull replica of the largest T-Rex ever excavated. She is on loan to us from the Chicago Field Museum. Take a selfie with a Velociraptor or is it a Deinonychus. Find the answer at the show. On Saturday U of M Natural History Museum will demonstrate what a paleontologist does and will operate a fossil dig. Kingman Museum Of Natural History, Inc. will bring replica dinosaur skulls, a cast of dinosaur eggs from the Gobi Desert which were first discovered in the 1920’s, stegosaurus plates and interactive activities. Palo Joe will also be in attendance doing “Dinosaur CSI” with Friday school groups and his “Great Lakes Basin Fossils” presentation Friday night. On Sunday, “Dinosaur Day with Paleo Joe” will be the afternoon presentation.
As in most years, WMU Geology department students will be present during the show providing educational activities to the public.
We are anticipating 15+ demonstrators in various lapidary and jewelry crafts, plus a demonstrator in the art of flintknapping. Our 16 dealers, several with over sized booths, have been carefully selected to provide the visitor with a diverse range of merchandise.
With games, crafts, gold panning demonstrations, geode cracking, Petoskey stone polishing and interactive learning activities, the Kalamazoo Show is an event for the whole family. We hope to see you there!
