MeteoritesMoldavite or Tektite?

15th Jan 2014 06:04 UTCJames Leader

I went to my favorite rock shop today and purchased some "Tektites". When I held them up to the light they had a green cast to them. I am pretty sure that they are Moldavite. I pointed this out to the shop owner and he just shrugged and said that some Tektites have a tint to them but that they were not Moldavite. I attached some pics of them for you. I appreciate any help in identifying them. Thank you! http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e232/louiscypher2000/IMG_4057.jpghttp://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e232/louiscypher2000/IMG_4055.jpghttp://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e232/louiscypher2000/IMG_4053.jpghttp://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e232/louiscypher2000/IMG_4052.jpghttp://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e232/louiscypher2000/IMG_4050.jpghttp://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e232/louiscypher2000/IMG_4054.jpg

Asking whether it's a "moldavite" or a "tektite" is like asking whether that round yellow edible thing is an "orange" or a "fruit". A moldavite is just one type of tektite. I cannot judge from the photo with certainty whether your pieces are moldavites or not, but the rock shop owner is correct that other types of tektites can sometimes also have a greenish or more often brownish translucency. The best moldavites are a beautiful gemmy green that one doesn't see in other types of tektites, but there are many (cheaper) moldavites that are brown or greenish brown too.
