MeteoritesMeteorite identification service

22nd Aug 2014 16:03 UTCJolyon Ralph Founder

Please note we are no longer offering help with identifying possible meteorites that you have found. There are several reasons for this:

1. We cannot identify whether something is a meteorite or not from a photo. It needs expert analysis.

2. To the best of my knowledge every single "meteorite" shown to us here has turned out not to be a meteorite.

3. We have had a problem with people insisting that their rock is a meteorite even when we have clearly told them that it is not. This just wastes our time, and we have far better things to do.

4. There are other places, both online and in the real world, that can provide a better service at meteorite identification

So - from now on it's best not to post photos of things you have found and ask if they are meteorites.

This rule only applies to "self collected" material. If you have purchased something and want some help in confirming whether it is real or not, then please ask away.

I'm sorry that the actions of a few spoil things for everyone else, but we do have to keep this community as harmonious as we can and sometimes that means taking difficult decisions such as this.
