May 2020102 imagesRe: Since we are staying home, how about seeing some minerals?Reply from Brent Lockhart in General.
Here's a Diaspore from the Mugla Province, Turkey.  It is 4.0 x 3.5 x 1.0 cms. and is from the recent pocket described in Rocks & Minerals Vol 95 #2 pp 145 - 151.  Hope all are doing fine and have enjoyed seeing these great minerals.
Apr 2020102 imagesRe: Since we are staying home, how about seeing some minerals?Reply from Brent Lockhart in General.
Mt eye was attracted to the crystals on the upper right of the piece, very cool.

Very nice Dale, wow.  When was it recovered?  I love the way the epimorph size increases towards the top of the piece.  Very interesting mineralogy.
May 2020102 imagesSince we are staying home, how about seeing some minerals?Posted by Brent Lockhart in General.
Since many of us are under some type of restriction due to the viral outbreak, how about some mineral photos to brighten things up?  Here's one from the famous Reel Mine in Lincoln County, North Carolina.  It is 14.0 x 11.5 x 8.5 cms. and comes from recent production in 2017/18.
Sep 2018Re: John VeevaertReply from Brent Lockhart in General.
This is so sad, John was such a great guy, honest to a tee, and a trail blazing internet dealer. He had a great eye for specimens and brought so many new things and classic materials back from the shows he attended. It was a real high point reading his reports and spot on analysis at the end of ...
Mar 2018Re: Ojuela Mine MineralsReply from Brent Lockhart in Identity Help.
Hi Alfredo Yes, I have seen those with the Legrandites. I purchased a specimen which has an association of elongated white crystals labeled as Smithsonite. Unfortunately the piece is in for base making, so I am unable to confirm that the white crystals are indeed Smithsonite. For now I am ...
Mar 2018Re: Ojuela Mine MineralsReply from Brent Lockhart in Identity Help.
Does anyone know what species were found with the recent Legrandite discoveries? This would be the batch seen at Tucson this year.
Sep 2016Native Sulphur InteractionsPosted by Brent Lockhart in General.
Does anyone know if there are certain minerals which should not be in close proximity to a native Sulphur specimen? I understand that native Silvers are one species that should be separated, does anyone have experiences with others such as carbonates for example? Many Thanks Brent Lockhart
Jun 20161064 imagesRe: Gail's NEW favourite of the day, PART 2Reply from Brent Lockhart in General.
Hi, this is my recent favorite, a Spinel twin from the Cung Truoi Mine, An Phu (Anfu), Luc Yen, Yenbai Province (Yen Bai Province), Vietnam. I had it exposed from the marble matrix, which showed a 4 cm symmetrical twin complete all the way round. It sort of looks like crystal model in ...
Apr 2016Re: Exploding CrystalsReply from Brent Lockhart in General.
About seven years ago I had a photographer in doing some work, so I left my then halogen case lights on. As we walked back into the room a small "pop" came from the top shelf of one of the cases. It turned out to be the top of a Brazilian Topaz crystal as it detached along the basal cleavage ...
Mar 2016Re: Rock CurrierReply from Brent Lockhart in General.
I only met Rock once, but his articles and descriptions of the many localities he visited were a part of my life since youth. His sense of humor and encyclopedic knowledge of minerals will be sorely missed. What a shock, RIP Rock. Brent Lockhart

Mar 2015Re: Edit of photograph informationReply from Brent Lockhart in General.
I think I have filed a delete request, but have another go. I will reload the photo with the correct photo attribution. Sorry for the extra work.
Mar 2015Re: Edit of photograph informationReply from Brent Lockhart in General.
Hi Debbie Here is a screen capture of the photo: I will correct the copyright after deletion and resubmit it. I just want to keep all my copyrights in compiance. Many thanks for your help. Brent

Can I delete it and start over?
Mar 2015Edit of photograph informationPosted by Brent Lockhart in General.
Hi I need to add a photographer copyright which was left off by mistake when I originally entered the specimen. The domain is showing ony "public" in the box and will not let me add the copyright info. How can I change it? Many Thanks, Brent Lockhart
Oct 2014Re: Min. Rec. Supplement – Mineral Collections in TexasReply from Brent Lockhart in General.
As a contributor to the MR supplement, I had no intention of ever putting a Texas piece, or a Rhodochrosite etc. for that matter in the issue. What I thought might be fun was a look at the variability of crystallography in common species, in this case from the alpine clefts of Switzerland. ...
Dec 2013Help on Azurite provenancePosted by Brent Lockhart in Identity Help.
Photo Hi All - I recently acquired these two Azurite xls from the Tsumeb mine. I was wondering if anyone had further information on when this pocket was encountered or at what approximate level in the mine. The crystals have a distinctive square cross section. The smaller piece has a 4.5 ...
Jan 2014Re: Cuprite exposure to sunlightReply from Brent Lockhart in Education.
Thanks to all for the unanimous advice to avoid light exposure. It makes sense to me that darker secondary products such as Copper or Tenorite may form and begin to block the transparent areas. I really like the contrast on these Milpillas Cuprites between the white matrix and the ruby red ...
Jan 2014Re: Cuprite exposure to sunlightReply from Brent Lockhart in Education.
Yes, that is good to know. Perhaps I should keep it out of light - better to be safe than sorry.
Jan 2014Re: Cuprite exposure to sunlightReply from Brent Lockhart in Education.
Hi Rob I have sent the piece off to have a base made for it, so am not currently able to answer your question. Sorry about that. Cheers, Brent
Nov 2013Cuprite exposure to sunlightPosted by Brent Lockhart in Education.
Hi All I have a general question regarding the effects of sunlight on Cuprite. Has anyone noticed darkening of specimens after routine exposure to sunlight? I have the attached specimen of Cuprite from the Milpillas Mine and wanted to take steps to protect it if needed. Thanks for your ...

I was enjoying this Smoky Quartz gwindel on its new base and thought I'd share it. The specimen is 12.5 cms. across and is from the Zinggenstocke, Grimsel, Kanton Bern, Switzerland. The xl is glassy, relatively flaw free, and clear enough to see through without strong lighting.
