Mar 2016Re: The Nautilus Show, Ghent, Belgium - Live ReportReply from Philip Mostmans to an article.
Same here! With everything going on I thought it would be OK to skip a year and then the supreme commander visits... better luck next time! :-)
Mar 2013Re: Unknown matrix from Huangang mining area, ChinaReply from Philip Mostmans in Identity Help.
Hi Reiner, Thank you for your insights. Think you might be on to something here. I doubt it to be Chalcopyrite, but Bornite/Chalcocite could definately be an option. I attached a photo of the complete specimen and to the left of the Bluish stuff, I definately notice an increase in brown color. ...
Apr 2013Re: Coming Soon: NY-NJ Show and beyondReply from Philip Mostmans to an article.
I would love the book from Mick, however P&P to Belgium is about 46USD for a 10USD book. I would like to order backissues from MinRec as well, same issue. Unless someone knows of a good alternative, I'll wait till I find it at one of the European shows...
Mar 2013Re: Unknown matrix from Huangang mining area, ChinaReply from Philip Mostmans in Identity Help.
Hi Uwe, Thank you for the reply. What makes the Arsenopyrite/Lollingite look so different from the ones in the other pictures? The coarse/iridescent look seems not very typical for either mineral. Best wishes, Philip
Mar 2013Re: Unknown matrix from Huangang mining area, ChinaReply from Philip Mostmans in Identity Help.
The colour of a fresh fracture appears to be a silvery grey, with a hint of brown.
Mar 2013Unknown matrix from Huangang mining area, ChinaPosted by Philip Mostmans in Identity Help.
Hi all, I was hoping anyone might be able to help me with this one... Attached is a close-up (cut out) of a larger foto of a Fluorite on matrix from the Huanggang mining area. Minerals present on the specimen I have identified are Fluorite, Calcite and Arsenopyrite. This remains a mistery ...
Feb 2013Re: Fluorite -- but from where?Reply from Philip Mostmans in Identity Help.
Eric, As a fellow Fluorite collector I know the phenomenon and with so many localities producing good Fluorite its near impossible to recover the correct provenance. I also purchased specimens in the past without any locality information, confident I could find it out on my own. I was nearly ...
Sep 2012Re: Fluorite West Pastures?Reply from Philip Mostmans in Improving Mindat.org.
After seeing the matrix my vote still goes towards West Pasture mine. Has anyone any compelling arguments against? Cheers! Philip
Sep 2012Re: Fluorite West Pastures?Reply from Philip Mostmans in Improving Mindat.org.
Hi Colin, If West PastureS is not correct, the locality and description on the locality page on mindat should be corrected. I always thought it to be with S, I remember reading it that way in Dunham as well? I have specimens from West Pasture with clearly identifiable siderite crystals (blade ...
Sep 2012Fluorite West Pastures?Posted by Philip Mostmans in Improving Mindat.org.
The specimen on this page looks a lot like Fluorite from West Pastures mine at Weardale in England. Localiies are far apart though, so I could be wrong? However everything fits, even on the association level (The Baryte looks more like corroded Siderite?). The UV recaction seems to be an ...
Jul 2012Fluorite - Siglo XX mine, Naica, Mun. de Saucillo, Chihuahua, MexicoPosted by Philip Mostmans in Photos.
Hi all, I uploaded this photo under Siglo XX mine in Mexico, since this was the locality provided with the specimen. No similar entries under silo xx however and as stated in the photo description I am not sure about the provenance. I've come across the El Filo Vein entry in mind at (also ...
May 2012Re: How "devoted" are you to your collection?Reply from Philip Mostmans in General.
First of thanks to everyone for their replies. It's been nice reading everyones comments. To be clear: To this date I haven't sold or needed to sell a single mineral for profit or personal gain. I don't foresee this to be changing in the near future. I guess the reason why this question (or ...
May 2012How "devoted" are you to your collection?Posted by Philip Mostmans in General.
A while ago I was imagining what I would do if the following situation would present itself... Image you are a beginning collector (Minerals, Coins, Stamps,...). You recently acquired a very good piece at a decent/bargain price. Image for this piece you payed 100€ (or dollar/whatever currency ...
May 2012Re: La Prieta Linda, Jalimas, Chihuahue, MexicoReply from Philip Mostmans in Identity Help.
Thanks for the input. You said exactly what I expected :-). Will post the photo to the forum of Jordi Fabre, see what that turns up, otherwise it will go down labeled as Muzquiz. Cheers! Philip
May 2012Re: La Prieta Linda, Jalimas, Chihuahue, MexicoReply from Philip Mostmans in Identity Help.
Ideas anyone?

May 2012Re: La Prieta Linda, Jalimas, Chihuahue, MexicoReply from Philip Mostmans in Identity Help.
Hi All, Sorry for not getting back sooner. Attached is a quick photograph of the specimen in question. Hopefully this might help in identifying the locality. Best wishes, Philip
May 2012Re: La Prieta Linda, Jalimas, Chihuahue, MexicoReply from Philip Mostmans in Identity Help.
Stephen, Thank you for your reply. I was researching Jalimas, Chihuahua to get an idea of its whereabouts, but had no luck. All I could find close to the word "Jalimas" is "Julimas". Julimas is on the other side of a mountain range from Melchor Muzquiz in Coahuila (about 300kms). Julimas (or ...
May 2012La Prieta Linda, Jalimas, Chihuahue, MexicoPosted by Philip Mostmans in Identity Help.
Hi all, Has anyone heard of the following locality: La Prieta Linda, Jalimas, Chihuahua, Mexico. It is currently not in the mindat database, it is supposed to be a small time mine sometime during the 70thies. The specimen I got from this locality is a very dark purple Fluorite with stepped ...

Thought I would share another Fluorite I acquired recently. Can't stop looking at it. Fluorite on Sphalerite from the Elmwood mine in Tennessee. Cubes about 5,5-6cm's on edge. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7199/6929523275_671aeb1cff_b.jpg
Mar 2012Re: Fluorite Halkyn, FlinshireReply from Philip Mostmans in Identity Help.
Hi all, Thanks for the responses! I must admit you are right Colleen. I have several Fletcher specimens (north of england Fluorites) and they are all well described, even with collecting dates. I haven't got any doubts on the correct provenance whatsoever. However with this specimen this is ...
Mar 2012Fluorite Halkyn, FlinshirePosted by Philip Mostmans in Identity Help.
Some years ago I purchased specimens from the George Flatcher collection (English collector). Along with the batch of specimens was this fluorite. It was labeled as coming from "Gravelotte, Transvaal, South Africa". However there is no evidence of any good quality Fluorite being found. Until ...

Jan 2012Re: Fluorite ,Egremont mine ? Durham.Reply from Philip Mostmans in Identity Help.
The locality contradicts itself. Egremont is a mining district in Cumbria (and not a mine): http://www.mindat.org/loc-1453.html While Weardale is indeed in co. Durham. If the matrix on the specimen is not Hematite, it is probably a safe bet the specimen didn't come from Egremont. The ...
Jan 2012Re: Help with English localities/species lists.Reply from Philip Mostmans in Identity Help.
I don't know about the locality, but I noticed it's a George Fletcher Label. In my experience he's never been wrong (and I have more than a dozen specimens from his collection), maybe a tad "over-accurate" :-). The specimen was most likely collected by himself.

Apr 201246 imagesRe: Oi! What about the best of the Brits?Reply from Philip Mostmans in General.
Jesse, In your pic of the Eastgate specimen in the upper right corner is a Fluorite twin with surface pits. I have seen those before mostly on specimens from Whiteheaps, as negative imprints of missing quartz crystals. Never seen them (this clearly) on specimens from any other loc's in the ...
Jan 2012Fluorite - Yaogangxian Mine, Yaogangxian W-Sn ore field, Yizhang Co., Chenzhou Prefecture, Hunan Province, ChinaPosted by Philip Mostmans in Photos.
Photograph seems to be consistent with a Fluorite specimen from Xianhualing/Xianhuapu, rather than Yaogangxian mine? Best wishes, Philip
Jan 2012Re: Florence (Haematite) Mine, CumbriaReply from Philip Mostmans in General.
Colin, Nice to hear from you again! It makes sense actually. I got three fluorite specimens from the Willy Israel Collection all from the early 70thies with Beckermet as the provenance. I always assumed the locality was "wrong", since Beckermet didn't really produce a great quantity/quality ...

Second that opinion. Tule mine in Mexico.
Nov 2011Re: Haywards Heath ShowReply from Philip Mostmans in Education.
Was wondering the same thing... I was planning on attending the show, but another more urgent appointment came up... There are some regular attendees that normally post their findings or show report, but this year it's unusually quiet?

I will remember Daniel from our conversations in the early days of mindat chat. He thought me a lot about collecting minerals and mineralogy in general, when I first started with collecting. He will be missed. My condolences to his family and friends.

Definately Hilton mine fluorite!
Jul 2010Re: Ste. Marie-aux-Mines show report pt. 3Reply from Philip Mostmans to an article.
Unknowingly we met at the booth of Hans & Jolanda. You got to photograph the azurite specimen Hans was showing you. Nice reports and pictures! Hope to meet you again someday!
Aug 2010Re: What do you have the most of in your collection?Reply from Philip Mostmans in General.
Most definately fluorite. About 600 specimens and counting. With worldwide classic locations and of course my favourites from the north of England. Got about 60 documented associated minerals going with these fluorite specimens.
May 2010Re: Odd Weardale paragenisisReply from Philip Mostmans in Identity Help.
@ Ian: Yes it does fluoresce, but in my opionion it is a lot weaker than other fluos from the 'neighbourhood'. The coherent factor in all the mines listed above is the Red vein, which is worked to some extend by all three (allthough named differently). Allenheads mine: Haven't seen a lot of ...

May 2010Re: Odd Weardale paragenisisReply from Philip Mostmans in Identity Help.
Forgot to mention I bought the specimen from Rob Lavinsky and it seems he put a photograph of it on mindat: http://www.mindat.org/photo-118148.html Also I checked fluorescence and although it shows the typical weardale purple/blue fluorescence it is not as vibrant as other pieces from the area ...
May 2010Re: Odd Weardale paragenisisReply from Philip Mostmans in Identity Help.
@ Paul: I've got some books on the geology of the pennines orefield, so no problems there. The pennine orefield is indeed classified as an MVT deposit, however I haven't seen much specimens around where galena & sphalerite occurs toghether with the fluorite in such abundance. @ Harjo: Based on ...
May 2010Odd Weardale paragenisisPosted by Philip Mostmans in Identity Help.
Recently I acquired a specimen labeled Weardale with the following suit of minerals: Fluorite, Quartz, Galena and Sphalerite. Now the odd thing is I have seen specimens from Weardale showing sphalerite, which isn't all that common in the dale I believe (with the Barium-zinc zone being on the ...
May 2010Re: Anyone recognise this type of label?Reply from Philip Mostmans in Identity Help.
Thanks for both replies. The name on the label looks indeed like M. Sauer. However the fact that the name is on this label might suggest that this is the person the previous owner got the specimen from and not the writer/owner of this label?
May 2010Anyone recognise this type of label?Posted by Philip Mostmans in Identity Help.

Feb 2010Re: Philadelphia Academy of sciences lableReply from Philip Mostmans in General.
The assumption of a pre-1882 origin is based on the fact that the the lable on the number is correct? Also could it be that the people from collectors edge have more information or records? Thanks for all the help! Philip
Feb 2010Re: Philadelphia Academy of sciences lableReply from Philip Mostmans in General.
Chris, Thanks for the information so far! Attached are two pics of the specimen in question. The lable is quit large: 20cm x 15cm The note Cumberland and the dash over Derbyshire is made in blue pen, so is the N° 1181 The circles and the numbers v3 & L13 are made in pencil. The names ...
