About ChiastoliteHide

Formula:
Al2(SiO4)O
A variety of Andalusite

Crystals of Andalusite containg cross-shaped inclusions of carbon. Common in some metamorphic rocks.

First described in 1754 (which actually predates the description of its parent species andalusite by 44 years!) by a Spanish author, Franciscan priest and paleontologist José Torrubia, and published in his famous book, "Aparato para la Historia Natural Española", (in which aragonite also appears). The description is accompanied by illustrations that depict the mineral unmistakably.

Visit gemdat.org for gemological information about Chiastolite.
