Named in 1993 by T. Armbruster, R. Oberhänsli, V. Bermanec, and R. Dixon in honor of Henno Martin (15 March 1910, Freiburg, Germany – 7 January 1998), geologist who studied the Precambrian geology of the area that includes the type locality. He wrote The Precambrian Geology of South-West Africa and Namaqualand.
